More than half a century after the advent of the nuclear age, is the world approaching a tipping point that will unleash an epidemic of nuclear proliferation?

Today many of the building blocks of a nuclear arsenal—scientific and engineering expertise, precision machine tools, software, design information—are more readily available than ever before. The nuclear pretensions of so-called rogue states and terrorist organizations are much discussed. But how firm is the resolve of those countries that historically have chosen to forswear nuclear weapons? A combination of changes in the international environment could set off a domino effect, with countries scrambling to develop nuclear weapons so as not to be left behind—or to develop nuclear "hedge" capacities that would allow them to build nuclear arsenals relatively quickly, if necessary.

The Nuclear Tipping Point examines the factors, both domestic and transnational, that shape nuclear policy. The authors, distinguished scholars and foreign policy practitioners with extensive government experience, develop a framework for understanding why certain countries may originally have decided to renounce nuclear weapons—and pinpoint some more recent country-specific factors that could give them cause to reconsider. Case studies of eight long-term stalwarts of the nonproliferation regime—Egypt, Germany, Japan, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Syria, Turkey, and Taiwan—flesh out this framework and show how even these countries might be pushed over the edge of a nuclear tipping point.

The authors offer prescriptions that would both prevent such countries from reconsidering their nuclear option and avert proliferation by others. The stakes are enormous and success is far from assured. To keep the tipping point beyond reach, the authors argue, the international community will have to act with unity, imagination, and strength, and Washington's leadership will be essential.

!1: Best Buy This book caught my attention for several reasons (other than my daughter left it for me to read) primarily the components of the title and the back cover.

- Fractalia, a place presumably based upon fractals.
- Episode 1. This is the first of a planned series. How long the series will be is not yet revealed.
- Reversing the Tipping Point. The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell is one of my top 10 books. How does Fractalia relate to Gladwell's work? I needed to know.
- The back cover stated in part: "With degrees in philosophy and computer science, A.J. is currently working on his doctorate in cognitive psychology at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He is investigating the brainwaves of the 'aha' moment and how meaning is created out of apparent nonsense. A.J. lives with his wife Stephanie in Massachusetts. But really he lives on the border between sense and nonsense. Just ask his wife."

With a comment like that, I said to myself, this guy has to be writing some good stuff. After reading Episode 1, I can confirm that he is.

When reading fantasy or science fiction works, one problem is to bring the reader (us) into the new world within the book. The author needs to be careful to develop the place and develop the story without letting the new world (place) hinder the story. Authors of books with a well known setting, New York city in the early 1900's, or Shakespearean/Elizabethan England, for example, do not have to worry about this. They can get on with the story as we already know something of the place. In Fractalia, A.J. creates a new world and carefully brings us along.

Episode 1 covers the introduction to Fractalia, the Talian "people", introduces some "typical' modern day teenagers, and then brings them together. The cooperation between the Talians and the teenagers in meeting a challenge together results in success. Well yes, it is Episode 1, how could it be otherwise? Once you open the pages and begin to read a work of fiction, you put aside some things (at least for a while) and let the author take you on the way. If the author is successful, your willingness and his/her success will result in a good book experience. If the author is not successful, if the telling gets in the way of the story, you can become lost and the author looses you.

"The real unknown is between the known, they liked to say. Or, they would say, between two things there is always another."

A.J. has succeeded in sparking my desire for Episode 2.

Where is it? How long will I (we) have to wait?

"The wise know the difference between a puzzle and a mystery. A puzzle is for solving with the mind. A mystery is for enjoying with the heart."

You can pass the time waiting patiently for Episode 2 by practicing to solve some outties. You can find these outties on Fractaliatheblog.blogspot.com/

This report focuses on influencers - those people who are making an impact on public opinion concerning climate change. The analysis considers how much prominent influencers are considered to be effective in shaping opinion, and how much they are thought to be wrong-thinking and/or annoying. Additionally, the study measures the influence of organisations and word-of-mouth on public perception of climate change.

Questions addressed
  • How much do public figures - politicians, celebrities, and eminent figures or scientists - affect attitudes towards climate change?
  • Which public figures are highly regarded or mistrusted on this subject?
  • How much impact have the leading international campaigning organizations had in affecting attitudes?
  • What cultural events have affected attitude?
  • How much do people talk to their peer groups? How much influence do peer groups have?
  • How does national, socio-demographic and the 3-fold attitudinal clustering affect the potential influencers’ impact and the amount the public discusses this area?
Quote:

“Internationally, Greenpeace is the organisation which is most recognised as being active in climate change: by 53% of Canadians, 62% of English people and 36% of Americans”

"Books abound on the dilemma's facing America. We recognize America is in trouble. However, America at the Tipping Point is a fresh and bold word not only about the economic and political issues but also about the moral choices that have led us to the brink. How did we get here and what can we do...read what Gary Frazier has to say and you will see!" Tim LaHaye, Co-author of the Left Behind series "What a sobering reading experience. Dr. Frazier will rock your world and challenge you to make some changes in your world view." Pat Williams, Senior Vice President, Orlando Magic, Author, Extreme Dreams Depend on Team "Gary Frazier writes with passion and conviction and motivates like few people I know to live with a sense of urgency in these turbulent times. Read this book because you will be filled with hope and faith to make a difference in the world." Dr. Jack Graham, Sr. Pastor, Prestonwood Baptist Church "I have long respected Dr. Gary Frazier's prophetic voice, but his new training book, America at the Tipping Point, captured my attention as a patriot. In a day of white noise rants against our beloved country, many have prematurely trumpeted taps. Dr. Frazier has stepped up to sound reveille and lead us to action." Dr. Jay Strack, President, Student Leadership University Gary Frazier is a respected and recognized speaker and writer on the subject of Bible prophecy and current events. He is a former pastor and has traveled to Israel more than 100 times since 1971. Gary is founder and President of Discovery Ministries located in the Dallas Ft. Worth metro area. Gary holds both a M.A. and a Ph.D. from Louisiana Baptist University and was honored with a Doctor of Humanities degree from Liberty University. He has appeared on numerous television programs as well as speaking on radio nationwide. Gary and his wife Sandra reside in Arlington, Texas.

!1: Best Buy Gary Frazier identifies all of the issues facing America, from an evangelical Christian worldview, that if not arrested, could lead to the destruction of our country, or at best weaken our position. He tackles all the contemporary issues facing us from the culture of death in our country and the decline of our educational system, to the overall moral decline of our nation.

Is the book provocative? You bet. Frazier unapologetically gives his perspective on each issue, and cites his references for further readings on the topics. This book is a must read to prepare one with a recap of where we are on the edge, and what we can do as individuals to help keep America from "tipping over." on Sale!

Body language is a complex and culturally defined form of communication...yet very few have ever studied nonverbal communication formally. But here, Fast shows us how to tap into our intuition, and read people like a book in a fraction of a second - Are they lying? Hiding something from you? Bluffing? Additionally, in this sound recording, Fast shows you how to mask your own "subtext", and hide your own nonverbal cues (voice, tone, posture, etc). This presentation also provides an adequate summary to two of Fast's previous books (Body Language, and Talking Between the Lines). His goal is simple: To help you succeed in business and in life by reading the meaning behind body language (i.e., their subtext). -- Malcolm Gladwell

Which is more dangerous, a gun or a swimming pool?

What do schoolteachers and sumo wrestlers have in common?

How much do parents really matter?

These may not sound like typical questions for an economist to ask. But Steven D. Levitt is not a typical economist. He studies the riddles of everyday life—from cheating and crime to parenting and sports—and reaches conclusions that turn conventional wisdom on its head. Freakonomics is a groundbreaking collaboration between Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner, an award-winning author and journalist. They set out to explore the inner workings of a crack gang, the truth about real estate agents, the secrets of the Ku Klux Klan, and much more. Through forceful storytelling and wry insight, they show that economics is, at root, the study of incentives—how people get what they want or need, especially when other people want or need the same thing.

Read More Full Content...

±1±: Best Buy Although the main topic of Freakonomics is the economy I feel the most valuable lessons can be found in the presentation of the book. I will admit I was skeptical about the book when I began. I consider myself a fair person and prefer to look at both sides of every argument. Although I did find most of the examples in this work conspiracy based, the way in which they were presented was very believable. Levitt did a great job in presenting information to drive home his hypothesis. Although the hypotheses was often far fetched, he did stand his ground and gave relatable examples. The fact of the matter is that nobody really knows how the economy works. Conservative or liberal, if we really know how the economy worked we would be able to control it. And looking at the last few years and events throughout history we clearly can not. This is a great read if your looking for another point of view, or a fresh look at the "hidden side of everything" on Sale!

What is the difference between choking and panicking? Why are there dozens of varieties of mustard-but only one variety of ketchup? What do football players teach us about how to hire teachers? What does hair dye tell us about the history of the 20th century?

In the past decade, Malcolm Gladwell has written three books that have radically changed how we understand our world and ourselves: The Tipping Point; Blink; and Outliers. Now, in What the Dog Saw, he brings together, for the first time, the best of his writing from TheNew Yorker over the same period.

Here is the bittersweet tale of the inventor of the birth control pill, and the dazzling inventions of the pasta sauce pioneer Howard Moscowitz. Gladwell sits with Ron Popeil, the king of the American kitchen, as he sells rotisserie ovens, and divines the secrets of Cesar Millan, the "dog whisperer" who can calm savage animals with the touch of his hand. He explores intelligence tests and ethnic profiling and "hindsight bias" and why it was that everyone in Silicon Valley once tripped over themselves to hire the same college graduate.

"Good writing," Gladwell says in his preface, "does not succeed or fail on the strength of its ability to persuade. It succeeds or fails on the strength of its ability to engage you, to make you think, to give you a glimpse into someone else's head."What the Dog Saw is yet another example of the buoyant spirit and unflagging curiosity that have made Malcolm Gladwell our most brilliant investigator of the hidden extraordinary.

±1±: Best Buy If you have a curious mind that likes to wonder about the origins and stories of things as obscure as tomato ketchup, Malcolm Gladwell's articles will (partly) sate your curiousity. This is a brilliant collection of his New Yorker articles, and Malcolm is especially good at dovetailing research with story, making each piece enlightening and intriguing. It makes you want to know more.

I particularly liked his chapter on Late Bloomers, and the research findings here ties in very nicely with his book "Outliers" where he argues that success is more often than not a congruence of factors, and not just a few. In Late Bloomers, Malcolm argues that those whose talents are recognised late in life often owe it to generous and supportive patrons who encourage their work and who believe in them when the rest of the world would happily have ignored them.

The chapter on why there isn't much variety of tomato ketchup is also excellent, and some of the insights he shares into the human mind (and our emotions) are refreshing views.

This is a wondeful collection of essays. Highly recommended even for those who normally stay away from non-fiction. on Sale!

Mark Twain once observed, “A lie can get halfway around the world before the truth can even get its boots on.” His observation rings true: Urban legends, conspiracy theories, and bogus public-health scares circulate effortlessly. Meanwhile, people with important ideas–business people, teachers, politicians, journalists, and others–struggle to make their ideas “stick.”

Why do some ideas thrive while others die? And how do we improve the chances of worthy ideas? In Made to Stick, accomplished educators and idea collectors Chip and Dan Heath tackle head-on these vexing questions. Inside, the brothers Heath reveal the anatomy of ideas that stick and explain ways to make ideas stickier, such as applying the “human scale principle,” using the “Velcro Theory of Memory,” and creating “curiosity gaps.”

In this indispensable guide, we discover that sticky messages of all kinds–from the infamous “kidney theft ring” hoax to a coach’s lessons on sportsmanship to a vision for a new product at Sony–draw their power from the same six traits.

Made to Stick is a book that will transform the way you communicate ideas. It’s a fast-paced tour of success stories (and failures)–the Nobel Prize-winning scientist who drank a glass of bacteria to prove a point about stomach ulcers; the charities who make use of “the Mother Teresa Effect”; the elementary-school teacher whose simulation actually prevented racial prejudice. Provocative, eye-opening, and often surprisingly funny, Made to Stick shows us the vital principles of winning ideas–and tells us how we can apply these rules to making our own messages stick.

±1±: Best Buy Really quick--before you have time to think--grab a pen and a pad of yellow sticky notes. Yes, they have to be yellow. Write down the following six principles of memorable messages:

1. Simplicity
2. Unexpectedness
3. Concreteness
4. Credibility
5. Emotional
6. Stories

It's a shame you're not in a bookstore right now--you could just tear the definitions right off of the dust jacket. Never mind. Now give yourself a moment to let your irritation pass at the cuteness of the first letters spelling out "success." There it goes. Not so bad, really. No worse than some of those sales management acronyms.

Now put this sticky note up where you work. (If you are a proctologist, please forgive me--the offense was unintentional.) And think about it for a day or two.

Then read this book. I'm not saying buy it, necessarily. But read it. It will help you make your messages mighty and memorable. Tell people I said so. Yell it at them if you have to. on Sale!

If anything it should promote a spark of interest in your own mind about your place in society at large and identify the relationships you have that dictate the products you use and the decisions you make.
